WHY KILIMANJARO LEMOSHO ROUTE?
WHY SHOULD I USE LEMOSHO ROUTE
The Lemosho route on Kilimanjaro is a top choice for climbers for several key reasons. Located on the western side of the mountain, Lemosho has earned a reputation for its high success rate, beautiful scenery, and fewer crowds. The trek begins at the Lemosho Gate and crosses the entire Shira Plateau, providing an enjoyable, relatively flat hike from Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2.
Many hikers today choose the Lemosho route due to its impressive success rate, especially compared to other routes. It can be completed in six, seven, or eight days, but more days generally mean a higher success rate, as this allows more time for acclimatization:
6-Day Itinerary: This option skips two camps, Shira Camp 1 and Karanga Camp. Without enough acclimatization time, the success rate tends to be lower, so we generally don’t recommend this itinerary.
7-Day Itinerary: This version only skips Shira Camp 1 and follows a similar pace as the 8-day itinerary after reaching Shira Camp 2. While possible, it requires more physical endurance on the second day.
8-Day Itinerary: This is the most recommended option due to its high success rate. It includes overnight stays at all camps, providing ample time for rest and acclimatization, which greatly improves the chances of reaching the summit comfortably and safely.
Here are some of the main reasons why the 8-day Lemosho route is especially popular:
Time for Acclimatization: With a gradual ascent and extra days, the 8-day route gives hikers more time to adjust to the altitude. Each day’s hike allows for breaks and natural acclimatization, which can make a huge difference in overall comfort and summit success.
Stunning Scenery: Starting on the western side of Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho route offers diverse landscapes. By the second day, hikers are treated to incredible views, including Kilimanjaro’s cultivation zone and glimpses of the peak itself. The route also provides one of the best ways to experience the Shira Plateau, with sweeping vistas from Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2.
Lower Crowds: Compared to popular routes like Machame and Marangu, the Lemosho route is less crowded, especially in the early stages. This gives climbers a quieter, more immersive experience on the mountain.
In summary, the Lemosho route, especially over eight days, is an ideal choice for those seeking a balanced Kilimanjaro experience. It combines high success rates, breathtaking scenery, fewer crowds, and a comfortable acclimatization pace, making it a preferred route to reach the summit.
